Emergence

An imitation of Klimt’s painting ‘Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer 1’, with Adele changed to look like a friend of mine, walking out of the picture.

In July 2018 an old friend from Journalspace, Christine Harrelson, who, like many other JS refugees, had fled to Facebook, issued the challenge ‘Who can make me look like I’m emerging from a painting on the wall?’. I naturally rose to it. Using a photo of Christine she’d supplied me with, I decided on Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer 1 by Gustave Klimt as the best painting to incorporate it into – though, unlike the original painting, where Klimt lacked my vision, I had Christine stepping out of the picture, having taken the place of Adele. The result can be seen above.

Lacking the gold leaf of Klimt’s original, I used Touch New T7 alcohol-based marker pens on bleedproof paper. The fine lines were done with a Uni-ball Signo Bit 0.28 pen.
